Presented by Students of UAB Human Rights 101

’63 in Focus is a multimedia screening and conversation that honors the Birmingham Campaign of 1963 through student-created photo essays and videos.

The featured work comes out of UAB’s Introduction to Human Rights course, where students explore the foundations of human rights and apply them through hands-on, community-engaged learning. Over the semester, students studied the history and philosophy of human rights, examined Birmingham’s role in the movement, and worked closely with us at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to reflect on what the 1963 campaign means today.

Through original multimedia projects, students connect the past to the present—offering personal, visual interpretations of justice and resistance.

UAB is proud to offer the region’s only Human Rights major. This event represents the heart of that program—engaged learning that connects the classroom to the community.
